How to decide on a gynae in Singapore

pilatesandprints

You've just seen the two lines on your pregnancy test kit. Congratulations! Now the next step is to confirm your pregnancy and you may be wondering which gynae to visit. There are plenty of obgyns in Singapore who are highly experienced, but how do you even go about choosing one?

Here are some tips to help you to decide on a gynae in Singapore.

Public or Private?

Do you have a preference of whether you would like to go to the public hospitals (SGH, KKH or NUH) for your doctor's appointments and delivery, or would you prefer to go private?

For the public hospitals, there are also two routes - subsided and private. Under the subsidised route, you will see a different gynaecologist for each visit, including your delivery and you don't have to worry about choosing a gynae. Costs are much more affordable. If you go to the private route in public hospitals, you will get to choose a gynae - you can do so at any point in time, so some people start with the subsidised route and switch to private, closer to their delivery date - and the costs for doctor's appointments can actually be comparable to some private clinics, though the hospitalisation costs for delivery would be slightly cheaper.

If you prefer to deliver in a private hospital, it is important to find a gynae who can deliver at your preferred hospital, if you have one.

Where is the clinic located?

On average, you will be visiting your gynae at least once a month, and it would help to find a clinic that is not too far from where you are typically located (e.g. home/office).

How would you like your gynae to support you?

Every mama has different preferences, and every gynae has their unique style. Some things to consider:

  • Do you need a gynae who will explain things in-depth to you, without you having to ask? Or would you only prefer to know the essentials?

  • Are you comfortable with appointments which are quick and to the point, or would you prefer to have a longer appointment with your doctor?

  • Do you have a preference between a female or male gynae?

  • Do you mind that waiting times can be long in the clinic, or you prefer a clinic which is less crowded?

  • Is it important to you to have a gynae who is pro-natural?

  • Do you need gynaes with a specific expertise? e.g. able to do VBAC, water births

It can be helpful to read reviews about gynaes to find one who suits your style. Check out my list of gynae reviews which have been kindly contributed by various mamas.

What kind of birth do you want to have?

It might feel like it's quite early to start thinking about the birth that you like to have when you've just found out that you're pregnant. But finding a gynae who is aligned with your birth preferences is of utmost importance for a positive birth outcome! You may not have an idea of how you want your birth to be like yet, and that's okay.

If you would like some guidance in figuring out your birth preferences, I would love to support you with my Birth Plan consultation to design your dream birth.

The bottom line is - if something about your gynae does not resonate with you, know that you can also change your gynae at any point in time during your pregnancy, even right at the last minute. I hope that this post was helpful for you to find the best gynae to support your pregnancy and birth!
